Song of the Month (Part 3.)

One of the most successful rock bands through its influential and popular acts is Queen. Some facts I quote from Wikipedia such as:

  • one of the world’s best selling music artists from their record sales which have been estimated at over 300 million worldwide;
  • the only band group that each member has composed more than one chart-topping single;
  • Queen’s Greatest Hits I & II was the most downloaded album on iTunes in the United States on January 2007.

The band itself is noted for their musical diversity, vocal harmonies, breathtaking arrangements, and incorporation of audience participation on their live performances. People knows Bohemian Rhapsody and We are the Champions very well as two of many Queen’s great songs. This month I prefer to present another exceptional composition, namely Somebody to Love.

Members of Queen, Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor multitracked their voices to create the impression of a 100-voice gospel choir in this rock ballad. The lyrics of Somebody to Love tell about faith, desperation and soul-searching; the singer questions both the lack of love experienced in his life and the role and existence of God.
